What Rights Do Unpaid Carers Have? Your Questions Answered

Unpaid carers do essential work, often without realising the support they’re entitled to. From financial help to time off, there are rights available that many overlook. Whether you’re caring for a spouse, child, or neighbour, here’s a clear guide to what you can claim and how to access it.

1. Carer’s Assessment

Under the Care Act 2014, you can request a free Carer’s Assessment from your local council. It reviews your needs—physical, emotional, or practical—and may suggest respite care or equipment to ease your role.

How to Get It: Contact your council’s social services team.

2. Carer’s Allowance

You might be eligible for Carer’s Allowance—£76.75 per week (as of 2025) if you care for someone at least 35 hours a week. It’s taxable and comes with income limits, so check the details.

How to Get It: Apply through GOV.UK or call 0800 731 0297.

3. Flexible Work Options

Since 2024, you can ask for flexible working hours from your first day in a job. Employers must consider your request fairly, especially if you explain your caring responsibilities.

How to Get It: Submit a written request to your employer outlining your situation.
